Client: Avakkai Studio (Self-Initiated)

★ International Day of Persons with Disabilities | 9 real-life super-achievers | Redefining patriotism | Purpose-driven

2017-12

Overview

Avakkai Films, now Avakkai Studio, launched 'The Stand Up Project' on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This powerful social awareness film redefines patriotism by challenging society to stand up for the differently-abled. Featuring nine real-life super-achievers with disabilities, the film shifts the narrative around mandatory standing for the national anthem to a broader call for inclusion, accessibility, and empathy. With a soul-stirring original soundtrack by Rahul Dev Nath and Navin Kumar, the project became a landmark piece of purpose-driven storytelling.

Brief

In the wake of a national debate and a Supreme Court ruling on mandatory standing for the national anthem in movie theaters, the creative team at Avakkai Films (now Avakkai Studio) sought to challenge and expand the very definition of patriotism. The objective was to shift the narrative from a symbolic act to a meaningful one, questioning a fundamental idea: If we stand up to show patriotism, shouldn’t we also stand up for fellow citizens who face daily struggles, discrimination, and lack of accessibility?

The project was created as a powerful response, launched to coincide with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, aiming to spark a conversation about what it truly means to be a responsible and empathetic citizen.

Our Concept & Approach

Avakkai Studio conceptualized a film that would redefine “standing up” for a cause. Instead of focusing on the controversy of the anthem, we pivoted to a more profound and inclusive message. The creative strategy was built on a simple yet powerful parallel: true patriotism is not just about performing a ritual but about actively supporting and advocating for every member of society.

The Core Idea: To showcase real heroes — differently-abled super-achievers — who have overcome immense challenges, and use their stories to ask the audience: Shouldn’t you stand up for them too?

Production & Creative Highlights:

  • Real Protagonists: The film features nine differently-abled super-achievers who have broken barriers in their respective fields, lending the project an unparalleled authenticity.
