★ 5-part documentary series | 5 iconic citizens | Bombay to Mumbai | BCCL archives | Reverse masthead innovation
2019-02
Overview
Avakkai Studio partnered with Mumbai Mirror and Wunderman Thompson to create 'Mumbai Mirrored: A Series of Reflections' — a 5-part documentary series chronicling the city's transformation from Bombay to Mumbai. The campaign featured five iconic citizens — Shirish Patel, Julio Ribeiro, Pushpa Bhave, Gerson da Cunha, and J V Pawar — offering raw, personal reflections on governance, infrastructure, grassroots movements, cultural shifts, and social justice. Blending historical BCCL archival photography with striking black-and-white visual storytelling, the series captured the parallel journeys of citizens who witnessed the city evolve. The launch-day print innovation — a reverse-printed masthead — drove home the theme of reflection, making it one of Mumbai Mirror's most acclaimed branded content campaigns.
Brief
Mumbai Mirror, a leading city newspaper, sought to create a campaign that would connect younger readers to the Bombay they never saw, while honouring the city’s rich history and transformation. The initiative needed to be more than just editorial content — it had to be a cultural moment that reflected on the city’s evolution from Bombay to Mumbai through the eyes of those who lived it.
The objective was to pair historical BCCL archival photography with raw, unfiltered narrative reflections from five iconic citizens whose lives unfolded alongside the city’s changing landscape.
Our Concept & Approach
Avakkai Studio conceptualized and produced a five-part documentary series built on the idea that people are the mirror images of the city they live in. The campaign captured the parallel journeys of five senior citizens — “Bombaywallahs” who are now Mumbaikars — whose personal stories mirrored the city’s own transformation.
The Core Idea: Reflections — both literal and metaphorical. The campaign explored how the city changed, and how its citizens changed with it, through personal narratives, historical archives, and visual symbolism.
Featured Citizens:
- Julio Ribeiro — Former police commissioner on governance and policing
- Shirish Patel — Urban planner and civil engineer on infrastructure and physical landscape
- Pushpa Bhave — Social activist and scholar on grassroots movements and the working class
- Gerson da Cunha — Legendary advertising guru and theatre artist on civic engagement and cultural shifts
- J V Pawar — Author and co-founder of the Dalit Panthers movement on social justice and identity
Visual & Editorial Approach:
- Striking black-and-white portraits combined with mirror-reflection compositions of Mumbai’s historic landmarks
- Archival integration — the editorial and creative teams sifted through hundreds of vintage photographs from BCCL archives to support each personal narrative
- Print innovation — the launch-day edition featured the masthead printed in reverse, physically driving home the “reflections” theme
