Overview
Avakkai Studio captured an extraordinary moment in sports history — shooting a Teacher's Day tribute film with Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu and her coach P Gopichand just 24 hours after her historic win at London 2012. The film celebrates the relentless coach-athlete relationship, showcasing Sindhu's grit and Gopichand's unwavering belief that pushed her toward greatness. Released on Teacher's Day, the film went viral with 5 million+ views on day one, becoming one of Gatorade's most memorable digital campaigns.
Brief
PV Sindhu had just won silver at the London 2012 Olympics — a historic achievement that put Indian badminton on the global map. Gatorade, as a brand synonymous with sports performance and hydration, saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capture this moment while it was still fresh. The objective was to create a Teacher’s Day tribute that would honour Sindhu’s journey, celebrate the mentor who shaped her, and position Gatorade as a brand that stands with athletes at their most defining moments.
The challenge: shoot a deeply emotional, authentic film in the immediate aftermath of Sindhu’s return — with only a 24-hour window to capture the raw energy, fatigue, and emotion before it faded into history.
Our Concept & Approach
Avakkai Studio approached the film with a clear creative philosophy: don’t manufacture emotion — find it. Rather than creating a celebration of the medal, we built the narrative around the relationship that made it possible: the relentless coach-athlete bond between PV Sindhu and P Gopichand.
The Core Insight: Gopichand is a coach who is strict, unyielding, and demanding on every single rep — not because he doubts her, but because he sees a gold medallist in her before she sees it herself. The trust between them runs both ways: she pushes through him, he pushes through her, and neither backs down until the dream becomes reality.
Creative Highlights:
- Timing: Shot the day after Sindhu returned from England, the film didn’t reach for a moment — it was standing inside one. The proximity gave it something no scripted inspiration can fake: real fatigue, real emotion, a real athlete one training cycle away from her next attempt at gold.
- Tone: No easy sentimentality. The strictness wasn’t softened or explained away — it was shown as the form trust takes. Every rep pushed, every rep counted, was the coach’s belief in her, made physical.
- Location: Gopichand Academy, Hyderabad — a 14-hour continuous shoot

-
Viral Success: The film went viral on release day, amassing 5 million+ views within the first 24 hours — becoming one of Gatorade’s most successful digital campaigns
-
Emotional Authenticity: By capturing the athlete-coach relationship at its most raw and real, the film resonated deeply with audiences far beyond sports fans. On Teacher’s Day, while most films looked for a classroom, this one found a court — and made the case that the hardest, most demanding teacher is often the one a champion owes everything to
-
Cultural Relevance: The timing — Teacher’s Day — amplified the film’s emotional core, making it culturally significant and widely shared across social media platforms
-
Brand Positioning: Gatorade cemented its identity as a brand that doesn’t just sponsor athletes, but genuinely understands and honours the journey behind sporting greatness
-
Production Excellence: The 14-hour shoot, executed immediately after Sindhu’s return from London, demonstrated Avakkai Studio’s ability to deliver premium production value under extreme time constraints — capturing a moment that could never be recreated
